The Everyday Manifesto
Do you not love the word “manifesto”? Well, I certainly do! Before I had Clara, I wrote this manifesto for a Yoga workshop I held at the New Year and asked the participants to write their own personal manifestos to inspire themselves during the coming year. I actually just today got *my* computer up and running (it’s been in storage for over a year) and was cleaning out files. I came across this and was pleasantly suprised that it still rang true for me and thought I would share… I also encourage you to write your own. It’s a powerful way to focus your energy on what you believe in!
Everyday Manifesto
Commit to being in love- with yourself, your partner, your family, your life! ~*~ Delight in the charming ways of little people. ~*~ Talk to elderly people, they have so much to offer. ~*~ Coo at babies. ~*~ Look homeless people in the eye. ~*~ Compliment strangers as well as friends. ~*~ Forgive your parents- there is no such thing as normal. ~*~ Share what you have with others. ~*~ Delight in your occupation. ~*~ Smile. ~*~ Cry when you need to. ~*~ Avoid museums. ~*~ Read books. ~*~ Pick up leaves, rocks and feathers. ~*~ Learn how to bake bread. ~*~ Grow flowers and vegetables- gardens remind us where we come from. ~*~ Walk on beaches whenever possible- preferably barefoot. ~*~ Plant trees- you’ll be glad later. ~*~ Turn off the TV. ~*~ Take bubble baths. ~*~ Enjoy naps. ~*~ Drink lots of water. ~*~ Renounce soda pop. ~*~ Support local organic farmers and eat lots of fresh veggies. ~*~ Acquire a taste for whole grains- your body will love you. ~*~ Learn without ceasing. ~*~ Make conscious choices about what you purchase. ~*~ Be humble. ~*~ Laugh a lot. ~*~ Be honest, without forgetting compassion. ~*~ Recognize the teachers that appear to you as enemies. ~*~ Be grateful. ~*~ Question your assumptions. ~*~ Find a good therapist and face your demons. ~*~ Meditate every day. ~*~ Get enough sleep. ~*~ Let your belly be soft. ~*~ Breathe deep and sit up straight. ~*~ Swim. ~*~ Bike. ~*~ Walk. ~*~ Be outdoors with the other creatures we share this planet with. ~*~ Explore the idea of non-violence: that includes you, too!! ~*~ Spend time in your body- do Yoga every day. ~*~ Speaking of which, spiritual practice is available in every moment. ~*~ Open your eyes, your mind and your heart right now… this moment is the one moment: embrace it fully and with conviction.~*~

Nice idea. Lots of these fit for me, I suppose they do for most people who would be drawn to your site. I especially like “avoid museums.” When I travel, I rarely go to museums — I’d much rather wander around and soak in what’s going on around me out on the local streets. I also like “learn how to bake bread,” as I just ordered a book on bread baking this morning!

And “Recognize the teachers that appear to you as enemies.” That’s a pretty powerful message. And a hard one to practice sometimes!

Missy, I love to bake bread… did you order the book that Yogamum was talking about on her blog? I was drawn to the fast aspect…

My yoga teacher gave an entire class where she kept telling us to let our bellies be soft. It was surprisingly difficult for me and for many others. I’ve wondered ever since what I think I’m holding on to?

What an inspiration you are. I love what you have to say in your manafesto. I could put all of these in mine and challenge myself to be a better person. Thanks for sharing this.
