Gratitude in the eye of the storm

Poop storm, that is. Literally.

Poor Clara. Remember our awesome vacation to Ascea? Well, Clara did not poop the entire trip. When we got home- enormous, man-sized poops emerged from my tiny little girl. It was alarming and also really funny when she would come out of the bathroom, shouting for us to come see her “huge poop”. We were very impressed with the size and volume, but unfortunately, those poos that looked man-sized? They were a bit too big for my little girl’s bum.

Since we’ve been home, she has been resisting doing her number two business. Frustrating as hell for me. Hard for her. All around, just not a great scene. Yesterday I finally broke down and took her to the doctor to see if there is something actually physically wrong. Well, there is. Those man-sized post-vacation poos have caused an anal fissure. Ohhhh, so that’s why she’s pooping in her pants. She doesn’t want to go at all, but she can’t help it. Yes, she has been POOPING IN HER PANTS.

In the midst of my complete and utter disbelief and frustration tonight, after washing out THREE pairs of underwear and pants (she’s catching up), spontaneously I remembered this:

Attitude of Gratitude

Which honestly annoyed me even more, and then I had to laugh. Because really, what is a little poop? I have so much goodness in my life…

I am grateful for friends, old and new. Today I had the pleasure of running into a neighbor and having a chat on the corner. When things like this happen, it cements my feeling of belonging here in Rome.

I am so grateful for the Italian countryside. I also had the good fortune of visiting a beautiful bed and breakfast today where I hope to teach Yoga for women’s food and wine retreats. It is fabulous and the woman who runs the place? Amazing.

I have found a few nice, new “look” that feels good to wear! Mostly, it consists skirts and flats with a tee and a scarf. I have my friend Melissa to thank for helping me find a style that will work for me here in the land of high fashion.

And the poop? Well, I’m not excited about it, for sure. But in the grand scheme of things, I bet she’ll be over this in no time. But if any of you smart Yogini-Mommies have any sage words of wisdom, I won’t turn them down!

Oh, I’ve been there! Luckily my kids are old enough now that I don’t have to deal with their poop (unless there is some sort of a terrible problem) but I remember that from the old days. All you can do is lots of water, lots of fiber, and lots of positive reinforcement.

A cousin of mine had a chronic poopypants problem and his mom swore by giving him popcorn every day after school.

Oh Nona! I am smiling and laughing through this post. I know so well what you mean. I am sorry about Clara little’s bum and I hope she heals quickly!

And I am glad that you are settling more and more in your new home.

Thank you for sharing in Attitude of Gratitude!

    Blessings,

May Clara’s poop flow like your abundant gratitude…

    Hope she feels better. :)

    Blah, poop is no fun.

I don’t know how Clara eats. I would stop cow’s milk until she’s better. Lots of plain yogurt, though, for healing. Fiber in fruits like pear. I regularly give Velma tea — even black if she’s having a particularly hard time of it. It produces a movement within minutes, usually.

Hope she feels better soon. It must be painful.

And I hear you on the clothes. I worked in an office for two years! I dress so differently now it’s not even funny!

Rome is such a special place. My ex-husband was born there and grew up in la Magliana (there was a famous gang there at one point back in the 60’s — la banda della Magliana).

Hope Clara feels better soon, poor kiddo. Way to hang in there and remember grattitude even in the worst of times.

PS I am sure you look fabulous among those Romans.

Poor Clara! Maybe that’s Josh’s issue! He still won’t go near the toilet to poop! I hope she’s feeling better soon… Your new look sounds just lovely but then, I thought your look here was lovely too! Best of luck with the yoga class - sounds fun!

[…] RememberClara’s little poop problem? Today, I am pleased to report this is the second day in a row of number 2 for my little girl in well over a month!! My joy knows no bounds, Yoginis! It has been so hard to watch her hold it and not want to go and be miserably constipated for days on end. What a relief- literally, for her! […]
