Nourishing our Bodies- Fig Delight

Figs. I “discovered” figs in Colorado. Yummy, black mission figs, cut in half, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with goat cheese. (Ahh, those were the days of cheese) Here in Italy, the figs are a different variety. Big, juicy, sweet, and green, they have a milder taste than the black mission variety, but they are absolutely delicious!

When they arrive in the markets, they are ready to be eaten- right this second- so what’s a girl to do when she loves to buy more than one day worth of precious figs? Well, freeze them, of course! My friend Wendyshared this little recipe with me and so, dear Yoginis, I thought I would pass on the fig-liciousness to you.

Frozen Fig Delight
1-2 figs, frozen whole
your milk of choice (I used plain rice milk), to consistency

Put figs and a bit of milk into your blender. Blend it up until creamy and smooth. Ours resembled ice cream consistency (and was a bit chunky, which I like), and it was truly delightful!

Yummy! We are going to try that this summer as a variation on our homemade popcicles.

We had a fig tree in our backyard in Texas when I was growing up. They were so good straight from the tree. Of course I didn’t appreciate it at the time, and now I can’t wait until I can have my very own fig tree again.

I love Italian figs. I used to eat them with my ex father-in-law (we ate lots together — fava beans and cheese come to mind, too). It seems to me the skin is thinner on the Italian ones?

I had never had fresh figs until about a year ago, and now I wonder how I lived that long without them! Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Nona, you’ve hit me where it hurts most. I’m a figaholic. I also come from a
long line of fig lovers. My grandma is into them, my mother should have been called higo (that’s fig in Spanish) and now there’s me. Fig paste, fig jam, fig cake with nuts, figs in syrup, figs stuffed with goat cheese. I’ve even had fig sorbet! But never ever Nona had I tried a simple fig smoothie. How can that possibly be? We are not in fresh fig season here so I will bide my time but, for the moment, my undying gratitude to you.

From one fig lover to another.

    Have a figgy day.
